Silene armeria, Linn. Sweet William Catchfly. Fig. 3616. Annual, glabrous, viscid above: sts. 1 – 1 1/2 ft. high, erect, simple or slightly branched: lowest lvs. spatulate, the others ovate or ovate-lanceolate, from a subcordate, clasping base: fls. pink or rose, in dense cymes, corymb-like, often dichotomous; calyx 10-nerved, cylindrical, clavate in fr.; petals obovate-cuneate, subretuse: caps. oblong. July-Sept. S. Eu. B.B. (ed. 2) 2:66. Var. alba, Hort., is a white-fld. form. CH
