Pieris japonica, D. Don (Andromeda japonica, Thunb.). Fig. 2946. Shrub, with spreading branches or sometimes small tree to 30 ft.: branches glabrous: lvs. crowded at the ends of branches, obovate-lanceolate or oblanceolate, crenately serrulate, narrowly cuneate at the base, glabrous, 1 1/2 -2 1/2 in. long: fls. in pendulous panicles, 2 1/2 - 5 in. long; corolla ovate, not angled, 1/4 in. long.
