Rhododendron ponticum, Linn. Shrub, 10 ft. high: lvs. elliptic to oblong, acute, pale green beneath, 3-5 in. long: clusters many-fld.; pedicels longer than fls., puberulous; calyx-lobes as long as ovary, the lower ones half as long; corolla funnelform-campanulate with oval lobes, purple, spotted brownish within, about 2 in. across; ovary glandular. May, June. Spain, Portugal, Asia Minor. B.M. 650.—This species is less hardy than the two preceding and now rarely found in cult. in its typical form. Var. album, Hort., has white fls. There are also varieties with variegated and one with purplish lvs.
