Araucaria cookii, R. Br. (A. columnaris, Hook.). A slender columnar tree, much narrower in shape than A. excelsa which it closely resembles when young: branches disposed as in A. excelsa, but tree tending to shed the lower ones; branchlets crowded on the oranches and turning upwards in a boat-like form: young Lvs. alternate and rather closely arranged on the branchlet and ¼ in. long, broad and slightly decurrent at base, slightly curved, mucronate; adult Lvs. densely imbricated, short and ovate, obtuse; cones 3-4 in. diam. and somewhat longer. New Caledonia, where it reaches a height of 200 ft., making very straight and imposing shafts. B.M. 4635. A.F. 12:559.—Named for Captain Cook. Var. aurea, Hort., has golden-yellow foliage. There is also a var. glauca, Hort., with silvery Lvs.
