Hairy, stemless herbs. Perennials which can be treated like annuals{{RHS}}. Leaves may spread or come up from a basal rosette, are entire to dentate (or rarely pinnately lobed), petiolate, and hairy underneath{{RHS}}.

Gerbera (named in honor of Traug. Gerber, a German naturalist who traveled in Russia). Compositae. A small group of temperate and tropical Asiatic and African perennial herbs grown for their yellow or pink or orange flower-heads.

Stemless herbs with radical, petioled leaves which are entire or sometimes lobed: flower-heads solitary, many-flowered, the conspicuous rays in 1 or 2 rows, those of the inner row, when present, very short and sometimes tubular and 2-lipped, as are the disk-flowers.: achenes beaked.— There are 40 species, only one of which (G. jamesonii) is well known in Amer. and is sometimes found outside the collections of botanic gardens and fanciers. They should be grown in the temperate house, in a rich compost of sandy loam and peat. Propagation by seeds or by cuttings of side shoots.

G. aurantiaca, Sch. A handsome plant with flowers 2 ½ inches diameter: florets red. with bright yellow anthers. Natal and the Transvaal. Has been listed under name of G. elsae.

—G. cantabrigiensis, Hort. A garden hybrid between G. jamesonii and G. viridifolia.

—G. viridifolia, Sch., is a little-known green-leaved plant with showy flowers that are white on the upper side, yellow beneath. S. Afr.—Well worth growing in temperate house.

Most common are the ''[[Gerbera jamesonii|G. jamesonii]]'' hybrids, with extremely long-lasting cut flowers{{RHS}}. The flowers come in a wide range of pastel and basic bright colors. In frost-free areas they overwinter safely outdoors{{RHS}}. In cold-winter areas, keep at 5-7°C (40-45°F) and keep just moist{{RHS}}.

Tip: Scald tip of stem when cutting flowers for vase to make them last longer{{RHS}}.

Plant Family: Belongs to the Caesalpiniaceae family, which includes Barbados Pride (Caesalpinia pulcherrima), Golden Shower (Cassia fistula) and Flamboyant (Delonix regia).

Description: Beautiful, wide spreading tree; one specimen in Dominica Botanic Gardens just north of Baobab (Adansonia digitata) (see Dominica Botanic Gardens website); up to about 15 m tall (50 ft) and 23 m spread (75 ft); yellowish to tan-colored trunk, dividing into several large branches low on stem; leaves bipinnate, with usually four pairs of small, ovate leaflets, about 2.5 cm long (1 in) and 1.5 cm wide (0.6 in); flowers small and light yellow.

Natural Habitat: Thrives in full sun; propagated primarily by seed.

Origin and Distribution: Native to Venezuela and the Caribbean.

Uses: Ornamental specimen and shade tree.

Stem erect and stiff, 1-2 feet, bulb-bearing at base, usually with only 1 cauline leaf, 1-5-flowered: sepals ovate-lanceolate, often dark-spotted; petals 1-2 inch long, white tinged with greenish yellow or lilac, with a purplish spot or band above the yellow base and hairy about the gland; anthers obtuse. Pratia (named after Prat-Bernon, with Freycinet's voyage). Campanulaceae. Slender prostrate or creeping herbs, rarely ascending or erect, sometimes grown for ornament.

Leaves alternate, toothed: inflorescence axillary, in 1-flowered peduncles; flowers rather small, often unisexual; calyx-tube adnate to the ovary, 5-parted; corolla oblique, split to the base at the back, 2-lipped, upper lip 2-parted, lower lip 3-lobed; stamens 5, 2 lower tipped with short bristles, 3 upper naked; ovary 2 celled: fruit a globose or obovoid berry.—About 30 species, mostly from Austral, and New Zeal., but also in S. E. Asia and S. Amer. Several species seem to be more or less extensively cultivated abroad. The genus is very closely related to Lobelia and similarly cultivation, differing from it in the indehiscent more or less succulent fruit. They are used both as greenhouse and hardy herbaceous rockwork plants, depending on the species.

P. ilicifolia, Hort., listed abroad as a charming little creeping plant with evergreen foliage studded through all the summer months with large pure white flowers followed by large lilac-colored berries, and loving a damp spot, is unknown botanically.

Tree, to 150 feet, with spreading branches and usually pendulous branchlets: bark reddish brown: young branches brown, glabrous or pubescent: leaves quadrangular, acute, dark green and usually shining, 1/2 - 1 inch long: staminate and pistillate flowers bright purple: cones cylindric-oblong, 4-7 inches long, light brown; scales obovate, with erose-denticulate margin. N. and Cent. Europe. —Though P. Abies is the correct name for this species according to the rules of priority, we have retained here the name P. excelsa, because Picea abies and Abies picea might be easily confused and are certainly somewhat perplexing. It seems therefore advisable to take the next oldest names which are Picea excelsa for the Norway spruce and Abies alba, Mill., for the silver fir. This tree is extensively planted as an ornamental tree in the northern and eastern states; it is of rapid growth and is a handsome tree, with its graceful habit and dark green dense foliage, but, like many spruces and firs, loses much of its beauty when it grows old, and usually after 30 years it becomes thin and ragged in the top. It is one of the best conifers to plant for shelters and windbreaks. The Norway spruce is very variable, and a great number of garden forms are in cult. Some of the more important are the following: Pendulous or sparingly branched forms of P. excelsa: Var. virgata, Casp. (var. denudata, Carr.). Sparingly branched, with long and slender branches destitute of branchlets, spreading, usually the lower ones pendulous and the upper ones ascending. P. excelsa var. elata, Hort., is probably a seedling of this variety and an intermediate form varying toward the type. Var. monstrosa, Beissn. (var. monocaulis, Nordl. Abies excelsa monstrosa, Loud.), is an extreme form of the preceding and is destitute of all branches; it consists only of a single stem clothed with thick rigid leaves Var. viminalis, Casp. Branches in remote whorls, almost horizontal, with very long and slender branchlets without or with very few lateral branchlets. Var. pendula, Jacq. & Herincq (var. reflexa, Carr.). With pendulous branches and branchlets; whorls of branches often irregular. Var. inversa, Beissn. (Abies excelsa inverta, Gord.). Similar to the preceding, but branches more closely appressed to the stem, more densely branched, with thick lustrous leaves.

Columnar forms: Var. pyramidalis, Carr. (var. erecta, Schroter). With branches ascending at an acute angle, forming a narrow, nearly columnar pyramid. Var. columnaris, Carr. With very short, horizontal much ramified branches, forming a narrow column. Var. cupres -sina, Thomas, is similar.

Dwarf and dense, pyramidal, subglobose or prostrate forms: Var. conica, Carr. A dense conical pyramid with ascending branches and slender branchlets: leaves thin and pointed. Var. Remontii, Beissn. A dense ovate or pyramidal form with short and dense branches. Var. Clanbrasiliana, Carr. (Abies excelsa Clanbrasiliana, Loud.). A compact roundish or broadly conical form with short and crowded branches: leaves short and thick. Var. compacta. Beissn. A subglobose dense form with slender branchlets and acute short leaves. Var. Gregoryana, Beissn. (Abies excelsa var. Gregoryana, Gord.). A compact subglobose form densely branched, with short thickish pungent leaves. Var. pygmaea, Carr. A very dense, small, pyramidal form with ascending branches and bright green leaves. Var. nana, Carr. A depressed subglobose form with dense horizontally spreading branches and short sometimes monstrous branchlets. Var. tabuliformis, Carr. A low flat form with horizontally spreading branches. Var. procumbens, Carr. A prostrate form with numerous short branchlets and dense short and pointed leaves. Var. dumosa, Carr. There are two forms of the common Norway spruce differing in the color of the young cones: Var. chlorocarpa, Purk. Young cones green: leaves obtusish, more appressed; leafing later. Leaves 6-8 inches long, broadly lanceolate: umbel very large; rays 4-6- flowered; flowers numerous, 2½ in. long; outer segments waxy, wavy margined, rosy red or pink with brown spots, inner ones thinner, pale greenish yellow, spotted.—The largest-flowered species; very effective when well grown.

Convolvulus Sepium, Linn. (Calystegia Sepium, R. Br.). Rut Land Beauty. Perennial trailer, 3-10 feet long, glabrous or minutely pubescent: Leaves round-cordate to deltoid-hastate, the basal lobes divaricate, entire or angulate: flowers white, rose or pink, with white stripes.— A very variable species. Cosmopolitan in temperate regions. An insidious weed in moist soil. The native forms have been called C. interior, House, Rocky Mt. region; and C. americanus, Greene, in the eastern states, but are difficult to distinguish. Var. repens, Gray (C. repens, Linn.). Pubescent: stems trailing or sprawling: the basal lobes of the leaves obtuse or rounded. Coastal region from Quebec to Florida.
