Begonia baumannii, Lemoine. Loose-hairy or nearly glabrous, the sts. often very short and the plant appearing acaulescent, but becoming 1-1½ ft. nigh: Lvs. large, orbicular, with short, thick petioles: peduncles 18 in. high, bearing panicles of 4-6 fls., which are rose-red, 4-petaled, from 3-4 in. across, and fragrant as roses. Bolivia, 8,000-9,000 ft. B.M. 7540. Gt. 40:1348; 42, p. 25. A.F. 7:561. G.F. 5:77.—It is described as plentiful in the moist valleys of the Cordilleras, where it is eaten by cattle. Distributed by Lemoine in 1890. Tubers as large as ostrich eggs. Habit of B. socotrana.&lt;br /&gt;
