		+	Cortusa (named by the herbalist Matthiolus after his friend Cortusus, professor of botany at Padua). Primulaceae. Scapose, perennial, pubescent herbs with iong-&talked, cordate-ovate lvs. and purple umbellate fls. C. Matthioli, Linn., from the Swiss Alps, has long been a choice and delicate but not very popular plant, suited for shady parts of the rockery. It was long considered the only species of the genus. It is an herbaceous perennial, about 6 in. high, pubescent, rhizomatous, with a few long-stalked, cordate, 7-9- lobed, dentate lvs., and a slender scape bearing an umbel of about 7 small, rosy purple, drooping fls., which appear in early spring. B.M. 987. L.B.C. 10:956. It has some resemblance to Primula cortusioides. The genus has possibly 4 species, and is distinguished from Primula and Androsace by its stamens attached to the base of the corolla, and its long-acuminate anthers. Its culture is similar to that of the hardy primulas, but it needs winter protection in the northern states. Prop, by division of the roots.
