I think that it induced these algae to conjugate.<br /> <br /> The pointer is showing conjugating filamentous green algae. The two strands are still separate at the bottom where the cells have not yet conjugated. As the strands get closer together a sex pilus is formed and one cell moves across to fuse with the other cell. The empty cell walls in the other strand can clearly be seen.
