Hippeastrum johnsonii, Bury. Fig. 1841. Fls. deep dull red, each segm. with a white stripe down the keel. A very profuse bloomer, and withstands much abuse. It is the most popular single amaryllid in this country, and is particularly prized for window-gardens. It is the oldest hybrid, having been raised by one Johnson, an English watchmaker, who, in 1799, crossed H. reginae with H. vittatum. Distinct and one of the best. Apparently not in American trade, but it has been used in hybridizing. G.W. 12, p. 653.<br />
