Paullinia (probably after Simon Paulli, 1608- 1680, professor of <br />
anatomy, surgery, and botany at Copenhagen). Sapindaceae. One species <br />
is a greenhouse climber, which may also be grown as an upright fern- <br />
like pot-plant.<br />

Twining shrubs: lvs. alternate, stipulate, compound, 1-3-ternate or <br />
pinnate, or decompound; petiole often winged; lfts. usually dentate, <br />
dotted or minutely lined: racemes axillary, usually witn 2 tendrils; <br />
fls. whitish or pale, small; sepals 5, the 2 upper larger, connate; <br />
petals 4, but there is a fifth abortive one, two of the petals <br />
smaller and bearing a scale below the apex; stamens 8; ovary <br />
3-celled, bearing a 3-parted style. Trop. Amer.. and sparingly in <br />
Afr.; species about 140. Distinguished from allied genera, as <br />
Cardiospermum, by the septicidal fr., which is often pear-shaped. P. <br />
thalictrifolia is a handsome stove foliage plant, with much divided <br />
lvs. somewhat resembling a rue, maidenhair, or davallia. The fls. are <br />
inconspicuous, pinkish and borne in autumn. Forty to fifty years ago, <br />
when the interest in foliage plants was at its height, this plant was <br />
widely distributed. It used to be trained to a trellis for exhibition <br />
or grown on the pillars and rafters of hothouses. It is now a rare <br />
but choice plant for clothing the tops of unsightly tubs in which <br />
palms are growing. It is also excellent for large vases and stands <br />
the sun well. The young lvs. have a pretty bronze tint unless they <br />
are shaded too much. The plant is prop, by cuttings of young shoots <br />
taken in early spring. If the tops are pinched, the young plants will <br />
branch out and make handsome specimens in 4- or 5- in. pots.<br />
