Philadelphus pubescens, Loisel. (P. latifolius, Schrad. P. grandiflorus, P. W, Wats., under which name it is often met with, a name commonly also applied to varieties of P. coronarius and of P. inodorus, P. nivalis, and many other species or supposed species; it is also wrongly called P. Gordonianus. Shrub, to 20 ft.: bark of old branches grayish, either cracking when old and not peeling, or peeling in little flakes, so that shreds do not remain, of younger branches generally yellowish or greenish yellow: lvs. ovate to broadly elliptic or ovate- lanceolate, 1 1/2-4 1/2 in. long, 3/4-3 in. wide (those of young succulent shoots and suckers may attain dimensions of 7 1/4 x 6 3/4 in.), acute to acuminate, almost entire to more or less markedly mucronate-denticulate: fls. in long leafy racemes of 5-10, usually distant, somewhat fragrant. June, July. Tenn., Ala. (last, according to Rydberg). Souvenir de Billiard (also cult, under the names P. Billiardii and P. insignis) is a horticultural variety, with ovate lvs. on the average smaller than in the species, about 1 1/4-2 3/8 in. long, erroneously described as a native species.
