Specularia (from Speculum Veneris, meaning Venus' looking-glass). Campanulaceae. Venus' looking-glass. Erect or decumbent, hispid or glabrous annual herbs, suitable for outdoor garden planting.<br />

Leaves alternate, entire or dentate: fls. blue, violet, or white, sessile or short-pedicelled, axillary; calyx-tube adnate, oblong or linear, limb 5-parted; corolla sub-rotate, or broad-campanulate, 5-lobed; stamens free; ovary inferior, 3-celled: caps. oblong or linear.—About 10 species, northern hemisphere, 1 also occurs in S. Austral. Closely allied to Campanula but differing by the very long calyx-tube, ovary, and caps. The long calyx-tube is one of the most conspicuous features of the plant and has perhaps served to suggest the handle of the mirror. There is one North American species, S. perfoliata, which differs from all the rest in having perfoliate lvs. and the caps. dehiscing laterally near the middle instead of near the calyx-lobes. It is a weed.<br />

S. Speculum, is a pretty little hardy annual herb with five-lobed blue flowers not quite an inch across. The plants grow about 9 inches high, bloom in spring and summer and are desirable for edging flower-beds. They are of easy culture. See Annuals.<br />
