Toddalia (Kaka Toddali, Malabar name of T. aculeata). Rutaceae. Shrubs usually somewhat climbing or sarmentose, unarmed or prickly, adapted to the warmhouse and hardy outdoors in the extreme S. Lvs. alternate, 3-foliate; lfts. sessile, lanceolate, leathery, entire or crenate, pellucid-punctate: cymes or panicles axillary and terminal: fls. rather small, unisexual by abortion; calyx short, 2-5-toothed, -lobed, or -parted; petals 2-5, imbricate or valvate; male fls., stamens 2, 4, 5, or 8, ovary rudimentary; female fls., ovary ovoid, oblong or globose, 2-7-rarely 1-celled: fr. pea-like, hard, coriaceous, globose, permanently syncarpous.—About 20 species (including Vepris), natives to the Old-World tropics and the Cape. In Toddalia proper the petals are valvate, and the stamens as many as the petals: in the subgenus Vepris the petals are imbricate and the stamens twice as many as the petals.<br />
