Tripetaleia (Greek, three and petals). Ericaceae. Two species of Japanese shrubs with deciduous alternate, short-petioled entire lvs. and white or pinkish fls. in terminal racemes or panicles: sepals and petals 3; stamens 6. shorter than the petals, the anthers opening with a longitudinal slit; ovary 3-celled, superior, short-stalked; style slender, curved: caps. septicidal, many-seeded. Closely allied to Elliottia, but easily distinguished by its 3-merous fls. T. paniculata has proved hardy at the Arnold Arboretum; it seems to like humid, but well-drained, peaty or sandy soil and will probably grow best in a rockery in a partly shaded place. The second species was only recently intro. and has not yet been tested. Prop. is by seeds treated like those of rhododendron and probably also by cuttings. T. paniculata, Sieb. & Zucc. Shrub, to 6 ft.: lvs. short-petioled, rhombic or rhombic-obovate, acute, cuneate at the base, glabrous except a few hairs on the midrib beneath. 1-2 1/2 in. long: fls. in panicles 2-4 in. long, white, tinged pink, 1/3 in. long, style exserted; bracts subulate. Aug. Japan. T. bracteata, Maxim., has smaller obovate obtuse lvs. and pink fls. in racemes, with elliptic or obovate bracts. Japan.<br />
