Low shrub, sometimes 10 ft. high, with wide-spreading, often procumbent branches, scurfy-pubescent when young: lvs. orbicular or broadly ovate, cordate at the base, short-acuminate or acute, irregularly serrulate, minutely pubescent or almost glabrous above, scurfy pubescent beneath, 3-8 in. broad: fls. white: cymes sessile, 3-5 in. broad; marginal fls. enlarged and sterile, long-pedicelled: fr. ovoid-oblong, dark purple. May, June. New Bruns. and Mich. to N. C. G.F. 2:535 (adapted in Fig. 3921).—Handsome shrub, with very large foliage, assuming a deep claret-red in fall. Var. praecox, Hesse.
