Until 1976, [[France]] was generally regarded as having an unchallenged reputation as the foremost producer of the world's best [[wine]]s. In that year a [[United Kingdom|British]] wine merchant, [[Steven Spurrier (wine authority)|Steven Spurrier]], organized a prestigious [[wine competition]] in [[Paris]], now known as the '''Paris Wine Tasting of 1976''' or the '''Judgment of Paris''', which was a [[Blind tasting|blind tasting]] of California and French Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignon.
