Carpet phlox ('''''Phlox hoodii'' ssp. ''canescens''''') is a plant of the western [[United States]], and in particular the [[sagebrush]] country.  It is among the first plants to bloom in [[Spring (season)|spring]], after the [[snow]] has melted.  It is a fairly common plant in this region; its name derives from its compact growth habit, which it shares with other (but somewhat to quite less common) species of [[phlox]].
