Pterocephalus (Greek, wing head, so named because the head appears covered with a lot of feathers after the fls. fall off). Dipsacaceae;. Herbs, half-shrubs and shrubs, annual or perennial: bracteoles narrow: involucral mouth short, ciliate. pubescent; calyx-limb 12-24 long bristles; corolla 5-fld; mostly without palea. About 20 species chiefly in the Medit. region but also in Asia. This genus was formerly included in Scabiosa but is now kept distinct.
