Glabrous: Leaves cordate-reniform, obtuse, with deep sinus at base: peduncle 8-10 inches long, 1-flowered.: flower very large, dingy yellow, with marks and reticulations of purple, the limb strongly flipped; tube strongly bent, purple inside; upper lip 4 inches long, violet within, hairy; lower lip not longer than the upper, 5-7 inches wide. Var. macrophylla, Duch. (A. ornithocephala, Hook.). Leaves large: upper lip 5 inches long, lanceolate-acuminate, projecting from the inflated headlike tube like the long beak of a bird; lower lip on a stalk 2 inches long, then expanding into a flattened, wavy, beautifully marked limb 4 in. long and 4-6 inches across.
