Small perennial herbs, with rosettes of narrow evergreen leaves on the ground, planted along borders and walks, used for continuous low edgings and in rock-gardens; sometimes grown as pot-plants. Scape naked, simple, 2-12 in. high, on which is borne a compact head of pink, lilac or white fls., the head being subtended by small bracts, forming a kind of involucre; fls. with plaited funnel-shaped dry calyx, the lobes pointed; 5 petals nearly or quite distinct and tapering at the base; 5 stamens opposite the corolla parts; styles 5, hairy below the middle: fr. a utricle inclosed in the calyx.—About 50 species in Eu., W. Asia, N. Afr. and 1 in N. Amer., much confused. Armerias are of easiest culture, being hardy and free growers.
