One of the 4 genera of the family, represented by a single Hawaiian species, H. sanduricensis, Oliver. It is a begonia-like succulent herb with alternate long-petioled obliquely cordate 5- to 9- lobed lvs. and bright pink or rose-colored showy fls. in a peduncled corymb: from Begonia it differs in having the ovary free in its upper third, and bearing petaloid organs in the female fls.: petals 5 in both male and female fls.; stamens many; styles 5, fleshy: caps, globose, opening at apex, not winged. The plant grows 2-5 ft. high, from a tuberous rhizome, sparsely hairy or gla- brate. It inhabits deep ravines or near waterfalls in different islands of the Hawaiian group. B.M. 6953. G.C.
