Rounded-headed tree, 30-40, occasionally to 75 ft. high, with tall trunk: branchlets densely pubescent at first: petioles villous; lfts. 15-19, usually 19, ovate- lanceolate to lanceolate, long-acuminate, usually rounded at the base, coarsely serrate, pubescent beneath on the midrib and veins, 2 ½ -4in. long: stamens 30-40: fr. globose, l ¼ -2 in. across, soft- pubescent; nut nearly globose, faintly grooved, with thick walls. cent. calif. S.S. 7:337J figs. 5-8. Gn. 49, p. 278.—A graceful ornamental tree often planted as a street tree in calif, and used as stock for grafting varieties of the English walnut.
