High- climbing, glabrous: evergreen southward: lvs.oval to oblong, glaucous beneath, the upper connate, 2-3 in. long: fls. in peduncled interrupted spikes; corolla with almost equal limb; tube slightly ventricose, glabrous, l ½ -2 in. long, scarlet or orange-scarlet, rarely yellow. May-Sept. Conn, to Fla., west to Neb. and Texas; farther north sometimes escaped from cult. B.M. 781. R.H. 1856:361. Gn. 45, p. 307. G.M. 54:724. Var. sulphurea, Jacques (var. flava, Regel.
