Spikelets 1-fld., 1 ½ -2 in. long, with a hard, curved beak, 2-3 together at the summit of the culms, partially inclosed in a foliaceous sheath: sts. slender, wiry, 2-3 ft., from a hard scaly running rootstock: blades involute, flexuous.—Species 1, L. Spartum, Linn., of arid parts of the Medit. region.
