Shrubs, trees and climbers in Trop. Asia, Austral. and the Pacific Isls., and some in Trop. Amer., perhaps 60 species now described: lvs. opposite, rarely in 3s: fls. white or crimson, in axillary or terminal, simple, panicled or umbellate heads; corolla-tube short or long, funnelform or salverform; lobes 4-7, coriaceous, valvate in the bud; stamens 4-7, usually 5, the filaments adnate to throat of corolla; ovary 2-4-celled, the styles united: fr. an aggregate of the ovaries, or berries, in the head. — -Some of the species yield dyes. The frs. of some of them are edible. One species, M. Roioc, Linn., is native in Fla., extending to the W.
