{{Inc| Osmaronia (derivation doubtful). Syn., Nuttallia. Rosaceae, subfamily Pruncae. Osoberry. Ornamental woody plant grown for its handsome foliage and early-appearing flowers. Deciduous shrub or small tree: winter-buds stalked, with few imbricate scales: Lvs. alternate, short-petioled, entire, with deciduous small stipules: fls. polygamo-dioecious or dioecious, white, in racemes; calyx cam- panulate; petals spatulate-oblong; stamens 15, 10 inserted with the petals, 5 below, with very short filaments; carpels 5; styles not exceeding the calyx-tube: fr. consisting of 1-5 oblong drupes with thin flesh and smooth stone.—One or possibly more species in W. N. Amer. The osoberries are usually shrubs with upright clustered stems, bright green generally oblong rather large leaves and with rather small white flowers appearing with the leaves in pendulous racemes followed by bluish black oblong drupes. The flowers resemble somewhat those of Ribes americanum. Hardy as far north as Massachusetts in somewhat sheltered positions, but sometimes injured by late frosts, as it leafs and flowers very early. It prefers a humid soil and a partly shaded situation.
