Schefflera arboricola (syn. Heptapleurum arboricolum) is a plant in the Araliaceae family. It is an evergreen shrub which can reach to 3-4 m tall. The trailing stems are weak and frequently scramble over other vegetation. The leaves are palmately compound, and have 7-9 leaflets. Leaflets are 9-20 cm long and 4-10 cm across in the wild, but normally smaller when cultivated. Flowers are produced in a 20 cm panicle of small umbels, each umbel 7-10 mm diameter with 5-10 flowers. ==Cultivation== A common houseplant, popular for its ability to tolerate neglect and poor growing conditions. If given great care, it can grow up to 10 inches per year. Many cultivars exist with a variety of leaf colors and patterns, with variegation ranging from creamy-white to yellow edges or centres, and dwarf forms especially selected for. It can be useful as a bonsai as well. The plant prefer bright light, but will grow well in lower light as well. This tropical plant prefers to be kept moist, but never let it sit in water, or the roots will rot. Soil should be moist but not wet. ===Propagation=== Take semi-ripe cuttings in summer and give bottom heat. Air-layering can be done in spring. Plant seeds in spring and maintain temperature at 66-75F (19-24C). ===Pests and diseases=== Scale insects, thrips, mealybugsAHS. ==Species== <!-- This section should be renamed Cultivars if it appears on a page for a species (rather than genus), or perhaps Varieties if there is a mix of cultivars, species, hybrids, etc --> ==Gallery== photo-sources<!-- remove this line if there are already 3 or more photos in the gallery --> <gallery> File:Schefflera arboricola Colorful berries (tanakawho).jpg| File:Schefflera arboricola.JPG| File:Schefflera arboricola.jpg| File:Schefflera arboricola1.jpg| File:Schefflera arboricola2.jpg| File:Starr 020108-0006 Schefflera arboricola.jpg| File:Starr 020108-0007 Schefflera arboricola.jpg| File:Starr 020108-0008 Schefflera arboricola.jpg| File:Starr 020108-0009 Schefflera arboricola.jpg| File:Starr 020108-0010 Schefflera arboricola.jpg| File:Starr 040812-0051 Schefflera arboricola.jpg| File:Starr 060814-8562 Schefflera arboricola.jpg| File:Starr 061109-1504 Schefflera arboricola.jpg| File:Starr 071024-0388 Schefflera arboricola.jpg| File:Starr 071024-0130 Schefflera arboricola.jpg| File:Starr 990105-2930 Schefflera arboricola.jpg| File:Starr 990105-2931 Schefflera arboricola.jpg| </gallery> ==References== *Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture, by L.
