Perennial, slender, 1-2 ft. tall, slightly roughened, and glandular above: root-lvs. oblanceolate; st.-lvs. lance linear to linear and rather small: fls. in a loose, cymosepaniculate cluster, red or pink, the petals cut into 4 linear segms.; calyx short-oblong, 10-ribbed. Eu., N. Asia.— Common in old gardens and also naturalized in parts of the eastern country. The double form (red or white) is prized for its close-packed fimbriate fls. An old-time and deserving favorite, blooming profusely and for most of the season. Hardy. Var. plenissima, Hort.
