It is a [[herbaceous plant|herb]] with opposite, simple [[leaf|leaves]] which have double-serate margins, borne on stiffly erect, branching square stems. The flowers appear in summer and are purple. ==Cultivation== Succeeds in any moderately fertile well-drained but moisture retentive soil in a sunny position{{pfaf1}} {{pfaf200}}. Plants are hardy to about -20°c{{pfaf187}}. The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil{{pfaf}}. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires moist soil{{pfaf}}. ===Propagation=== Seed - sow early spring in a greenhouse or cold frame and only just cover the seed{{pfaf1}}.
