{{Inc| Pasania (the vernacular name of one of the species in Java). Fagaceae. Ornamental trees grown for their handsome foliage. Evergreen: winter-buds with few foliaeeous scales: lvs. short-petioled, entire or dentate: staminate fls. in upright catkins, with a rudimentary ovary; stamens usually 12. much longer than the 4-6-lobed calyx; pistillate fls. solitary or 3-5, on separate catkins or at the base of the staminate catkins; ovary 3-celled, with 3 cylindric styles stigmatic only at the apex: fr. a 1- seeded nut, surrounded at the base or wholly inclosed by the cup, its scales distinct and imbricate or connate into concentric rings.—About 100 species in S. E. Asia, one in Calif. Closely related to Quercus, from which it is easily distinguished by the upright staminate catkins and the cylindric styles stigmatic only at the apex.— The pasanias can be grown in warmer temperate regions only and are little known in cult.
