About 7 species, Medit. region, W. Asia, and India. This genus is treated as a part of Centaurea by Hoffmann in Engler and Prantl, Pflanzenfamilien IV, pt. 5. V. muricata, Benth. & Hook. f. (Amberboa muricata, DC.). St. erect, 1-2 ft. high: basal lvs. lanceolate, attenuate to the petiole; cauline sessile, middle ones auricled, upper and lowest not auricled, linear- or oblong-lanceolate: fls. purple. Spain and Morocco.
