Ibidium (named from the fancied resemblance of the anther to the beak of an ibis). Orchidaceae. By some authors used to supplant the generic name Spiranthes (which see), but the latter name is retained by the "nomina conservanda" of the Vienna code. Under Ibidium, the nomenclature becomes:
I. coloratum, House (Spiranthes colorata, N.E. Br.);
I. cernuum, House (Spiranthes cernua, Rich.);
I. romanzoffianum, House (Spiranthes romanzoffiana, Cham.);
I. plantagineum, House (Neottia plantaginea, Raf. Neottia lucida, H. H. Eaton. Spiranthes latifolia, Torr. S. lucida, Ames);
I. praecox, House (Spiranthes praecox, Wats.);
I. beckii, House (Spiranthes beckii, Lindl. S. simplex, Gray. S. Grayi, Ames);
I. gracile, House (Neottia gracilis, Bigel. Spiranthes gracilis, Beck);
I. vernale, House (Spiranthes vernalis, Engelm. & Gray). Lvs. oblong-lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, tapering to both ends, ¼ in. wide or less, mostly basal, the lower ones usually withering before flowering time: scape densely pubescent above; floral-bracts longer than the ovaries, with hyaline margins; raceme slender, 1-ranked, 1-3 in. long; fls. 1/3 in. long, yellowish, lip ovate to ovate-oblong, pubescent beneath. Mass, to Fla., 111. and Kans. H. D. House.
