There's a fun article in the New York Times about a 14 year old girl who started a half acre farm in place of part of her family's lawn, and is making a pretty respectable income with the resulting harvest. Her farm venture, called "Garden to Go C.S.A. (community-supported agriculture) grows for 14 members, who pay $100 to $175 for two months of just-picked vegetables and herbs." We don't all have a half an acre to grow on, but she's producing for 14 families in that space, plus no doubt herself, so you don't need a whole lot of space to grow the veggies you need.
