spiny. pinnate leaves. aromatic bark. attractive habit. handsome foliage. aromatic foliage. Spreading, rounded shrub. deciduous. shrub or small tree. Broad flattened spines on branches. finely hairy branches. Compound leaves. leaves have 7 to 11 oval to oblong leaflets. leaflets are smooth, toothed. leaflets to 2 in (5 cm) long. leaflets have prickly midrib. Slender cymes of flowers. reddish green flowers. flowers in mid-summer. red to black berries in autumn.
