Scientific Names


Hybrid between the genera Zygopetalum and Pabstia (which was previously known as Colax). More compact plant than many zygopetalums. Flowers more than once a year. Name was recently changed from the well known × Zygocolax. Individual flowers are 1.5-3.5 in (3.5-9 cm) across.

Prefer intermediate temperatures, with moist/shaded conditions. Direct sunlight will scorch the leaves if exposed even briefly. Plants require humid environment with excellent air circulation, or else leaf tips dry and foliage can spot. Sphagnum moss or fine-grade bark are suitable medium. They must not be over-potted. Winter and spring are primary bloom period, but many of the hybrids also bloom during other season when new growth is semi-mature.

  • × Zygopabstia 'Gumeracha' - Zones 9-11. 4th generation hybrid with species Zygopetalum maxillare, Z. intermedium, Z. crinitum, and Pabstia jugosa in its background. Green flowers, overlaid with dark brown and maroon markings. The labellum is marked with white or cream. Zones 9-11. Height is 8-24 in (20-60 cm), width is 4-20 in (10-50 cm)
