Lupinus polyphyllus, Lindl. (L. grandiflorus, Lindl.). Stout, erect species, forming tufts 2-5 ft. high: lvs. distant, mostly radical, long-petioled; lfts. lanceolate, glabrate above, silky hairy below, 2-6 in. long: fls. on long stalks, alternate, pedicelled, deep blue: pod 1-1 ½ in. long, narrow. June-Sept. Wash, to Calif. Gn. 45, p. 459; 55, p. 215.—A common garden species of merit, succeeding in any good soil. Var. Moerheimii, Hort. A very beautiful new intro. from the firm of B. Ruys at Dedemsvaart in 1906-7. Two to 3 ft. tall, much more compact and erect than the true polyphyllus forms: fls. long-lived, bright pink, rose to white. Without doubt it is the best variety which exists. R.B. 37:225; 38:217. G.M. 51:613. Var. albiflorus, Hort. (var. albus), is white, bold and showy. Var. bicolor, Hort., is variegated blue and white. Var. Foxei is uncertain.
