Rhus canadensis, Marsh. (Schmaltzia aromatica, Desv. R. aromatica, Ait. Schmaltzia crenata, Greene). Aromatic shrub, to 3 ft., with ascending or diffuse branches: lvs. petioled, 2-4 in. long; lfts. pubescent, the terminal one ovate or obovate, acute or acuminate, cuneate at the base; the lateral lfts. ovate, unequal at the base: fls. and frs. like those of the preceding species, but fls. yellow and frs. slightly larger. Ont. and Vt. to Minn, and south to Fla. and La.—A good cover plant for dry rocky banks; conspicuous in early spring by its yellow fls. B.B. (ed. 2) 2:482.
