China, Japan. Gt. 1877:308. S.I.F. 2:44. F.E. 17, pl. 72 (habit). Var. Semenowii, Pax (A. Semenowii, Regel & Herd.). Shrub: lvs. smaller, deeply 3- or nearly 5-lobed.
