Tree, to 40 ft., with stout, spreading branches, forming a regular pyramid, but in old age usually round-topped and irregular: branchlets puberulous, light grayish brown: lvs. 3-5, usually 4, rigid, incurved, pale glaucous green, 1 1/2 -1 3/4 in. long: cone subglobose, 1 1/2-2 in. broad, chestnut-brown, lustrous; apophysis thick, pyramidal, conspicuously keeled; umbo with minute recurved prickle; seed about Hin. long.
