Zingiber zerumbet, Roscoe. Sts. 12-20 in. high, stout, from a tuberous rhizome: lvs. densely aggregated, oblong-lanceolate, acuminate, base acute, both surfaces glabrous or scattered pilose beneath, 3 1/2 – 6 x 2 – 2 3/4 in.: spike subglobose, dense, 2 – 3 1/2 in. long; bracts obtuse, pale green, margins pubescent (sometimes, at least when older, red): calyx spathe-like, white; corolla-tube slender, lobes lanceolate, white, lip short, broadly suborbicular or subovate, pale yellow, tinted orange in the center (sometimes red-spotted), lateral lobes short, rotundate. The large inflorescences are shaped like a cone, at first pale green then turning a strong red. Out of these the white with light yellow lip fragrant flowers bloom in late summer. Cut flowers last long. Stalks and leaves are erect and very ornamental. Dark green shiny leaves are on arching stems. The leaves and stalks are also fragrant.

Cultivars

  • 'Variegatum (syns. Zingiber darceyi, Z. 'Darceyi') - leaves have cream stripes. Plants are smaller and more frost sensitive.
