Berberis julianae ( Wintergreen barberry, Julian's Berberis or Chinese barberry) is a Shrub of the Berberidaceae family. The species is native to Central China but has been grown elsewhere as Ornamental plant. It is a popular hedge plant, thanks to its dense, swift growth and long thorns.

The foliage shifts colour through the seasons, with coppery young growth progressively darkening to deep green through the year. The dark blue berries that appear in autumn are not especially flavourful but are safe to eat.

Once these plants reach 4 feet, their branches tend to arch downwards and they won't get much taller.

Cultivation

These plants don't mind a bit of shade, but they must have a well drained soil to thrive.
