Ladybugs are part of the Coccinellidae family of beetles, and are also called ladybirds (Britain, Australia and S Africa) or lady beetles (by some scientists). They are less commonly known as lady cow, ladyclock, or lady fly.

They are generally considered to be useful, as many species feed on aphids or scale insects, both of which are common garden pests.
