Kochia (after W. D. J. Koch, 1771-1849, professor of botany at Erlangen; wrote a flora of Germany and Switzerland). Chenopodiaceae. Summer Cypress. Mock Cypress. This includes two hardy annuals, called the "mock cypress" or "summer cypress," grown for the compact habit and the herbage which is green in summer and turns red in autumn. Kochia is a polymorphous genus of herbs which are often woody at the base: lvs. often minute and narrow, alternate, more or less silky, rarely glabrous: fls. small or minute, sessile, solitary or clustered in the axils of the lvs.; calyx enlarging into a flask-shaped body, which incloses the fr.; perianth orbicular; lobes 5, incurved and bearing horizontal wings on the back or on the tube which are membranous or scarious, distinct or confluent; stamens 5; filaments short or long and compressed; stigmas 2, rarely 3.—Species 30-40, of which one is native in the W. U. S. and the others in the Old World and Austral. The seed may be sown indoors in April, and the plants set out in May, or the seeds may be sown in the open ground about May 1. The plants should stand about 2 to 3 feet apart.
