Lonicera involucrata, Banks (Distegia involucrata, Cockerell). Shrub, to 3 feet, with upright branches, glabrous or somewhat pubescent: leaves ellipticovate to oblong-lanceolate, bright green, slightly pubescent beneath when young, 2-5 inches long: flowers erect, long-peduncled; corolla yellowish or slightly tinged red, viscid, pubescent, with short erect lobes, about ½ inch long; stamens as long as limb: berries black, shining, almost inclosed by the enlarged purple bractlets. May-July. Ontario to Alaska, south to Mexico. Var. flavescens, Rehd. (L. flavescens, Dipp.). Leaves light green, thin, oblong- or ovate- lanceolate, 3-5 inches long: corolla less gibbous, yellowish. Brit. Col. to Wyo. and Utah^CH. Var. serotina, Koehne. Leaves oblong-ovate to oblong: corolla flushed bright scarlet. June-Aug. Colo. A very striking variety on account of its brightly colored flowers^CH. Var. humilis, Koehne. Dwarfer and with smaller leaves^CH. The above text is from the Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture.
