Carpet phlox (Phlox hoodii ssp. canescens) is a plant of the western United States, and in particular the sagebrush country. It is among the first plants to bloom in spring, after the snow has melted. It is a fairly common plant in this region; its name derives from its compact growth habit, which it shares with other (but somewhat to quite less common) species of phlox.
