The crooked trunk and drooping branches are most of the time covered with pairs of one curved and one straight spine. The glossy leaves droop and show three obvious veins from the base. Yellow flowers come in clusters which are not noticeable, followed by round grape-sized fruit with a dry pulp inside, rather meal-like. The fruit turns dark red when ripe and is edible, but not delicious.
