Pellaea (Greek, pellos, dusky; from the usually dark-colored leaf-stalks). Polypodiaceae. Small rock- loving ferns thriving best on limestone rocks. Sori at the ends of free veins forming a mostly continuous marginal band around the segms. and covered by the more or less changed margin of the segms. The species are perhaps 40 or more, widely scattered in many countries. Some of them are glasshouse subjects and others are hardy. P. Stelleri, Beddome (P. gracilis. Hook.), a rare membranous species of the eastern states, is more closely allied to the genus Cryptogramma, to which Prantl has referred it. L. M.
