Sinomenium (Sina, China, and Greek, men, moon, meaning Chinese moon-seed). Menispermaceae. A shrubby vine from E. Asia closely related to Menispermum and Cocculus; from the first it differs in the parts of the fl. being arranged in whorls and in the 9-12 stamens, and from the second chiefly in the structure of the flattened curved seed: lvs. deciduous, alternate, long-petioled: fls. dioecious, small, in axillary and terminal panicles; sepals 6, pilose outside; petals 6, inflexed at the base and inclosing the filaments; the pistillate fls. with 9 staminodes and 3 carpels with recurved styles: fr. a drupe with a compressed crescent-shaped stone ribbed on the back. A handsome vigorous-growing twining vine with large lustrous often lobed lvs. remaining green until late in autumn, with inconspicuous fls. in long pendulous racemes and bluish black frs. It has proved only half-hardy at the Arnold Arboretum. Prop. like cocculus and menispermum. CH
