Lilium chalcedonicum, Linn. (L. rubrum, Parkin.). Scarlet Turk's-cap Lily. Bulb similar to that of L. monadelphum: st. 2-4 ft. high, green, tinged purple, covered with white down: leaves 100 or more, lower ones horizontal, 2-6 in. long, 1/6 - 1/4 in.- wide, upper ones smaller and more erect: flowers 3-6 or more, 2-3 in. diam., brilliant vermilion-scarlet, rarely slightly dotted purple; segms. thick and waxy, reflexed to the st. and papillose at the base; anthers scarlet; the odor is rather disagreeable. July, early Aug. Greece and the Ionian Isls. Var. macularum, Hort. (var. excelsum, Hort., var. majus, Hort.), is a larger, stronger grower, while the flowers are usually solitary and more thickly dotted purple: very rare. Both are hardy and of easy culture and should be more generally grown. CH
