Veronica hectori, Hook, f. Stout fairly hardy shrub 6-30 in. high: st. terete, closely marked by old lf.-scars: lvs. densely imbricating, opposite pairs united to middle forming a ring surrounding the branch, broadly orbicular-oblong, 1/10 – 1/8 in. long, obtuse, smooth, shining, puberulous on margin: fls. crowded at tips of branches, forming small, ovate, terminal heads, small, white. Mountains 3,000-6,000 ft., New Zeal., chiefly in the southwest.—Other allied whipcord veronicas are: V. tetragona, Hook., branches obtusely 4-angled, lvs. obtuse, keeled; V. lycopodioides, Hook, f., branches acutely 4-angled, lvs. narrowed into a blunt point; V. Armstrongii, Kirk, branches flabellate, terete, lvs. subacute, fls. pale lilac; V. salicornioides, Hook, f., branches terete, lvs. united to much above middle, subtruncate, fls. white. V. propinqua, Cheesem. (V. cupressoides var. variabilis, N. E. Br.), was for many years cult. in gardens under the name of V. salicornioides but it is semi-decumbent with slender branches about 1/20 in. diam. and minute lvs. The above text is from the Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture.
